Pineapples 🍍

Updated: May 25, 2020

While growing your own pineapple is a fairly easy process, it could take your plant up to two years to begin bearing fruit of its own if it does at all. However, like avocados, they can be kept as a house plant for decades.

To propagate your own pineapple, all you need is the top piece. The pineapple needs to be fairly ripe and the leaves in good condition for it to work. To remove the top section, simply twist it off. This ensures you get no excess pieces of flesh which will go moldy later on.

It should look something like this. Once you have your top, remove roughly a quarter of bottom leaves by peeling them downwards. Slice around three centimetres of the base off to get rid of any remaining fruit or fibers.

From there on, just place the top in a cup or glass of water and your'e good to go! Just make sure you change the water every 4-5 days to prevent bacterial growth and mold. Make sure your pineapple top is situated near a sunny windowsill so it receives ample light. A south-facing window is ideal.

After a couple of weeks, you should be able to see roots growing at the base of your pineapple top. Note: if your leaves are drying out and your plant has already produced roots, just cut the dry ends off. Once these roots are a few centimetres long, transfer it into a pot of soil. It should begin to develop new growth in the next few weeks. You can leave your plant indoors as long as it's placed in a sunny position.

Although it requires a lot of patience, growing your own pineapple from scraps is an easy, fun procedure that can be quite rewarding in the long run.
